Business Change / Driver:  

The DG team’s purpose is to maximize the MWs of economically viable DG projects, build and manage external partnerships and internal capabilities to deploy hundreds of MWs of DG projects annually and continually optimize the performance of our installed base.   

The Senior Director, Distributed Generation will lead Walmart’s Distributed Generation activities across three areas: 

DG Integration across Walmart  

He/she will provide overall direction by analyzing business objectives and customer needs; developing, communicating, building support for, and implementing early-, mid-, and late-stage DG projects; collaborate across technical, engineering, finance, and asset management teams across all development activities; develop proposals; identify project risks and valuation assumptions; create and oversee development strategies; identify and structure joint development agreements 

 

Project Development of distribution level renewables / clean energy projects 

He/she will have responsibility for all aspects of project development from site identification to construction. He/she will lead site identification/control (where applicable), interconnection, project design optimization, identification of value streams and preparation of comprehensive proposals and investment cases, and permitting work for solar and storage projects across Walmart’s real estate footprint.  

 

He/she will be the primary point of contact for all project stakeholders and will work cross-functionally within Walmart and all external parties to ensure projects are successfully completed. He/she will also assist with due diligence activities for offsite project opportunities.   

 

Asset Management of installed base 

As the business owner of the DG portfolio, he/she will ensure timely reporting and tracking of asset performance, proactive and reactive system maintenance & repowering and continuous evaluation and implementation of strategies to optimize & monetize system capabilities across internal use case and external markets. 

Essential Functions: 

  • Commercial Leadership:  Provides vision and oversight for Distributed Generation projects by identifying high value areas for deployment and working to optimize project design and operating strategy; fully entitle opportunities with all permits and approvals required for construction and operation; structure, negotiate, and review contracts with third party service providers; recommending capital budgeting for global projects; and obtaining executive approval for the projects 

  • Development:  Lead the planning, development, and execution of high value solar and storage projects across Walmart’s real estate footprint in alignment with Walmart’s Energy Transformation strategy  

  • Support Walmart’s offsite clean energy investment activities as needed  

  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders to improve and optimize project economics and timelines 

  • Develops and leverages internal and external partnerships and networks to maximize the achievement of business goals by sponsoring and leading key community and partner outreach and involvement initiatives 

  • Team Development: Build a high-caliber, engaged and high-performing energy infrastructure development team to support ongoing site evaluation and programmatic deployment across Walmart’s footprint 

  • Asset Management:  Maintain end-to-end ownership of all solar and storage projects in partnership with cross-functional teams (e.g., Realty), including addressing prdocution and uptime issues, managing performance against plan, and continually identify opportunities to maximize returns via new revenue streams, new technology or synergies. 

Minimum Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Business, Finance, or related field 

  • 1 year of supervisory experience  

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Business, Finance, or related field 

  • At least 5-7 years of experience in the energy industry 

  • Proven track record of solar and/or energy storage development (additional experience in community solar, residential solar and EV charging experience would be ideal) 

  • In-depth knowledge of regional RTOs, IOU and/or state-level markets for generation and storage  

  • Understanding of all facets of the energy project development process 

  • Strong communication skills with ability to deliver creative, value-accretive solutions 

  • Ability to multi-task and manage numerous projects simultaneously 

  • Experience working through internal business partners 

  • 5 years project management experience 

  • 4 years’ experience negotiating contracts or terms of service agreements
