Join Walmart, the world’s largest food retailer and our Regulatory Legal Team as the Lead Counsel of Food Safety Regulations. This role will report to our Vice President and Chief Counsel of Financial Services and Regulatory Legal. In this Lead Counsel role, you will provide legal advice, guidance, and support to various stakeholders on food safety legal and regulatory matters. You will also support food related business strategies such as, innovations in food manufacturing and production, and growth in the Company’s private label programs.
In addition, the Lead Counsel of Food Safety will support other legal teams and businesses on interesting and innovative customer facing solutions like Walmart Pickup and Delivery. The Lead Counsel will also represent Walmart in applicable regulatory matters at the federal and state level, work with outside counsel on complex matters and interact with relevant government agencies and regulatory bodies.
You’ll make an impact by:
Tracking, monitoring, and advising the business and the global governance teams on federal and state food related statutory, regulatory, and enforcement developments.
Providing legal advice and counsel to the company to enhance and maintain initiatives on a range of food related legal, business, and compliance matters.
Having experience with U. S. Food and Drug Administration and U. S. Department of Agriculture compliance, including, Food Safety Modernization Act, facility inspections, enforcement actions, and product recalls. Also, experience with food safety related matters such as Global Food Safety Initiative, Generally Recognized as Safe, New Dietary Ingredients, California’s Proposition 65, pesticide residues, and packaging assessments.
Having experience in supporting the development of food claims, including ingredient assessments, and labeling requirements, competitor challenges, including before the National Advertising Division and courts, as well as litigation support on false advertising cases and other matters.
Providing legal guidance for food manufacturing and supporting food risk and audit programs.
Reviewing and advising on agreements with various parties to ensure compliance with legal, contractual, and corporate requirements.
Developing best practices and procedures to ensure compliance with state and federal laws and regulations.
Finding solutions to support Walmart’s strategic initiatives related to food, ensuring that we deliver to our customers safe and affordable food options, including the method of delivery.
Successfully collaborating with internal and external stakeholders.

7+ yrs. prior experience in government, in-house, or private practice with a reputable firm.
Experience advising clients on U. S. Food and Drug Administration and U. S. Department of Agriculture regulatory compliance and enforcement matters.
Ability to evaluate scientific and safety data and information to support ingredient safety assessments and claims substantiation.
Familiarity with domestic programs and regulations applicable to Walmart’s activities, including, but not limited to, corporate compliance programs, and/or experience with U. S. federal and corresponding state regulatory regimes in food safety and compliance.
