Staff Software Engineer-React Native Platform

What you'll do at

The application platform/framework team builds and maintains frameworks and libraries that form a foundation of technology that is used by both the web and native feature teams throughout Walmart eCommerce. The fundamental goal of our team is to make developers’ lives as easy as possible when building applications for Walmart, Inc. Our secondary objective is to open source the work that we do, to make the lives of external developers easier as well.
For the mobile world, we are investing heavily in React Native. We are solving complex problems, such as; the best way to share code effectively across web, Android, and iOS, and providing over the air updates to our mobile applications, to deliver improved experiences and new functionality silently.

We are looking for a senior engineer with a strong mobile iOS background, who is keen to expand their skill set and venture into the territory of React Native, and help us build a React Native platform that can scale to the size of’s and’s mobile needs.

Enthusiasm for learning React Native is a must, but previous React Native experience is not required. We will invest time and effort in you learning React Native and JavaScript.

Key responsibilities:
• Code the React Native platform, which means developing in React Native and associated Swift native language.
• Contribute to the vision, roadmap, and open source plan for all applications, libraries, modules, and tools built.
• Support application teams that are migrating to our platform; that could mean training them, helping them debug, etc.
• Opportunity to lead others in the development of platforms, libs, modules, etc.
• Make our future open source projects successful by driving high rates of adoption.
• Debug and do root cause analysis of critical business and production issues.
• Ensure business needs are being met and our organization is prosperous; that means sometimes jumping on high priority projects that may be unrelated from platform work, but require the help of the application platform team.
Position Requirements:
• Willing to focus on Objective C/Swift and React Native development for 99% of your work.
• Expertise in object-oriented design and implementation, and capable of forming a deep understanding of our underlying frameworks and languages.
• Track record in developing highly scalable and performant applications, libraries, modules, tools, etc.
• Flexible approach and heavily focused on the end to end solution - with the capability to form a deep understanding of both the breadth of the systems and depths of the frameworks/libraries we use.
o An example of breadth: We own the platform from concept, to pushing an application to production, to managing its health. To do this well, an understanding of our network topography is needed.
o An example of depth: to improve iOS performance, knowledge of the inner workings of iOS is required
o An example of flexibility required; we own the build and deployment of the applications, so you may need to write build scripts or stand up web servers that will build the application and deploy to production.
o Ability to lead and develop against large-scale, complex, cross-functional projects
o Strong customer focus (in this case internal and external developers) and dedication to making their lives better.
o Promotes and supports company policies, procedures, mission, values, and standards of ethics and integrity
• Ability to work with distributed teams in a collaborative and productive manner
• Passionate and self-driven
• Flexibility to move onto different projects that utilize your skills and strengths as business conditions change
