About the Role

As the Category Director in Home Decor, you are responsible for the P&L for the largest business within Home Décor, building & implementing a supporting strategy and leading & developing a team of category specialists. It's your job to ensure your team is efficient & effective as they develop a best-in-class assortment, deliver competitive pricing that lives up to our brand promise, create a high-converting customer experience and analyze marketplace trends to identify new opportunities for the future. Creativity and agility will be paramount as you identify retail trends and synthesize information and partnerships across multiple cross-functional touch points, providing goals, communicating business needs & driving solutions in a fast-paced, multi-dimensional environment.

You’ll work within a world-class team of collaborative colleagues and have access to industry-leading merchandising tools and technology to help you analyze and interpret customer, partner, market, business and financial insights at scale. Business Relationships:

  • Manages relationships with key strategic suppliers for a category
  • Negotiates product volumes, costs, and terms with vendors for a category
  • Develops and leverages internal and external partnerships and networks to maximize the achievement of business goals

Category Financials:

  • Builds a data-driven strategic business plan with tangible execution steps for a category with
  • Develops and communicates budgets
  • Manages P&L for business area or category
  • Maintains overall responsibility for meeting financial targets (e.g. GMV and margin), and communicating (and ensuring the team executes upon) levers to achieve those targets

Category Tracking/Monitoring:

  • Provides guidance and strategic direction regarding tracking and monitoring performance for a category based on broad industry and organizational knowledge
  • Maintains overall accountability for category performance across multiple sites

Collaboration:

  • Collaborates with product teams to establish the site as a best-in-class leader within its product categories for a category
  • Cultivates an environment where associates respect and adhere to company standards of integrity and ethics
  • Develops and implements strategies to attract and maintain a highly skilled and engaged workforce
  • Develops and leverages internal and external partnerships and networks to maximize the achievement of business goals

 Empowering Others:

  • Supports a favorable environment in a category in which Category Specialists are empowered to lead and execute on the category's strategy and objectives

Market Positioning and Analytics:

  • Directs the analysis of key market and product positioning information for a category and builds expertise across retailer/brand dynamics, shopper requirements, competitor site benchmarking, etc.
  • Reviews and develops plans for category success based on analysis
  • Determines category assortment and strategy/market positioning across multiple websites and drives continuous improvement through strategic partnerships with retailers and brands
  • Advises on best way to optimize product sourcing mix

People Development:

  • Ensures associates are receiving learning and development opportunities (e.g. training, mentoring) for the good of the associate and Walmart
  • Coaches team members and provides feedback to enhance skills, knowledge and work performance
  • Mentors Category Managers and less experienced associates
  • Provides overall direction

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in business, retail or related field.  MBA from top-tier preferred.
  • 7 years experience in category management, pricing, site merchandising, planning or inventory planning or related area OR 7 years of experience in business, retail, category management, pricing, site merchandising, planning or inventory planning or related area
  • Strong communication and presentation skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • 4 years supervisory experience
  • Previous management consulting experience preferred
